Coal
Coal, a sedimentary rock primarily composed of carbon, is a fossil fuel formed from ancient plant and animal remains over millions of years. Its color ranges from brownish-black to black. Coal is classified into various types based on its composition and age, with peat (a precursor), lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, and anthracite being the most common. Anthracite, the oldest and most carbon-rich variety, has a very low moisture and volatile content.
Coal Applications
Coal, a fossil fuel, is a vital resource for numerous industries worldwide. Its applications include:
Power Generation:
Steam coal is used to produce electricity, currently meeting 40% of global needs.
Steel Production:
Coking coal (metallurgical coal) is essential for steel manufacturing, accounting for 70% of global steel production.
Chemicals:
Coal byproducts, such as coal tar, are used to manufacture benzene, naphthalene, phenol, ammonia-based fertilizers, and salts.
Other Industries:
Activated carbon, derived from coal, is used in water and air purification. Coal is also used in the production of silicon metal, which has applications in lubricants, water repellents, resins, cosmetics, and more.
Coal Packing
Coal can be transported by train, ship, truck, or other means.
