Kaolin
Kaolin, a soft white clay is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of porcelain. This versatile material is also widely used in the production of paper, rubber, paint, and many other products.
Kaolin is a collective term for mostly iron-free clays containing the mineral kaolinite. It forms from the weathering of feldspar, resulting in a pure white clay that can be discolored yellow by iron oxides. It usually contains natural admixtures of quartz, muscovite, and/or magnetite. Kaolinite has the chemical formula Al2Si2O5(OH)4, corresponding to an aluminum silicate hydrate.
Kaolin applications
Paper:
Kaolin is used as a filler and coating for paper, enhancing smoothness, brightness, opacity, and printability.
Paint:
Kaolin acts as a pigment extender in both water-based and oil-based paints.
Ceramics:
Kaolin and ball clays are key ingredients in ceramics, including dinnerware, sanitaryware, tile, and refractories.
Rubber:
Kaolin reinforces and stiffens rubber goods, particularly in non-black rubber products.
Plastics:
Kaolin is used as a filler in plastics, improving surface finish, reducing cracking, enhancing thermal stability, and contributing to impact strength.
Ink:
Kaolin is a major inorganic pigment used in ink, improving ink holdout and extending both colored and white pigments.
Catalysts:
Kaolin is a key component in catalyst substrates used in the catalytic cracking of petroleum.
Fiberglass:
Kaolin is a major ingredient in fiberglass production, which has wide applications in insulation, reinforcement, and various other products.
Portland Cement:
Kaolin is used to modify the properties of ceramic bodies, including controlling casting rate, improving whiteness, and enhancing rheological stability.
