Bentonite
Bentonite, a highly plastic clay composed of smectite minerals, swells or shrinks significantly when exposed to water. Formed from altered volcanic ash or rocks, it exhibits strong colloidal properties, increasing in volume and creating a gelatinous, viscous substance. Its key properties—swelling, water absorption, viscosity, and thixotropy—make it a versatile material, earning it the nickname "the mineral with a thousand uses."
Three main types exist:
- High swelling (sodium): Most useful due to its high swelling capacity, used in foundries, drilling mud, animal feed, and civil engineering.
- Low swelling (calcium): Primarily used in animal feed pellets.
- Moderate swelling (intermediate sodium-calcium): Used in applications where intermediate swelling is desired.
Bentonite applications:
The main uses of bentonite are in drilling mud and as a binder, purifier, absorbent, and carrier for fertilizers or pesticides.
Drilling Mud:
Bentonite's unique rheological properties make it a crucial component in drilling mud. It lubricates tools, removes cuttings, and helps prevent blowouts. Its viscosity and thixotropic nature form a mud cake that prevents fluid invasion.
Binder:
Bentonite is widely used as a foundry-sand bond, especially in the production of iron and steel castings. Its binding properties also find use in the manufacture of iron ore pellets and as an ingredient in clay bodies and ceramic glazes.
Molding:
Bentonite's ability to create a sticky coating on sand grains makes it ideal for molding in sand casting. When mixed with sand, it forms a moldable aggregate known as green sand, crucial for ancient and modern metalworking.
Purification:
Bentonite is used for decolorizing oils and clarifying various beverages like wine, liquor, and vinegar. Its ability to adsorb proteins makes it particularly valuable in winemaking, preventing unwanted cloudiness or haze in white wines.
